Not many detectives seek out psychics as they doggedly pursue cold cases, but Brighton’s Roy Grace is not your typical British stoic. The hero of the bestselling Peter James novels makes his series debut in this dark and twisty show that just dopped its five (short) seasons on BritBox.

Grace stands out for its lead detective’s unconventional methods, but it’s also a deep dive into the underbelly of the UK’s seaside town of Brighton, a mix of Santa Monica and Provincetown, where organized crime, missing persons, financial fraud, and murders hinge on psychological drama over gore. Adding a layer is Roy Grace’s missing wife, Sandy, who vanished years earlier, leaving a wound that shapes his obsession, his empathy, and his moral quagmires. It’s darker than Vera but less bleak than Luther.
