The first horror film to win the U.S. Grand Jury prize at Sundance, Nanny is a thought-provoking psychological thriller and “existential fever dream,” as the writer-director Nikyatu Jusu describes it.  The story:  Newly arrived from West Africa, Aisha (Anna Diop, Titans) takes a job as an au pair for a wealthy New York City couple, despite having a master’s degree. Just as she’s on the brink of bringing her young son over from Senegal, a violent force begins to haunt her reality.  The Watercooler take:  A thoughtful social critique of the state of the American dream, Nanny mixes moments of joy and romance into its slow simmering horror, all while shining its light on the plight of undocumented workers dropped into care work.
