Arriving just in time for back-to-school, FX’s new R-rated high-school sitcom delivers a laugh-out-loud antidote to the slew of darker shows dropping across streaming. Set against an upbeat 80s soundtrack, the series is set in our current times, which means it tackles several of today’s timely topics head on: book bans, deepfake porn, ChatGPT-created papers, conspiracy theories about teachers’ “gay agendas” — all while keeping the sunshine beaming in and the jokes flying.

The delicate dance of managing shifting cultural goal posts, prickly Gen-Z teenagers, and overbearing parents keeps the comedy and the drama coming, and TikTok and Instagram followers might recognize the show’s star and creator, Brian Jordan Alvarez, who’s been going viral in the form of his alter ego, TJ Mack.  You might also know him from his recurring roles in the Will & Grace reboot and Jane the Virgin.  Three of six episodes stream today on Hulu.
