Like all great movies, Get Out faithfully obeys the conventions of its genre – in this case horror films shot through with brutal wit and sharp-eyed allegory – while getting at profound psychic and political realities. The shocks and the laughs are thoroughly entertaining, but it’s the truth of Get Out that’s so real.

Having already admired Pattinson’s post-vampire work in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and elsewhere, I wasn’t surprised to see him kill it in this role as a shambling antihero in the “Dog Day Afternoon” mode. With this movie, both Pattinson and the Safdie brothers have broken new ground in their careers.

In striving to surprise us every minute with its seen-it-all irony, Guardians Vol. 2 is actually the surprise-spoiler of all time. Every Wow! or Haha! has been scripted in advance.
