A relentlessly creative and stylish show that isn’t afraid to put big ideas and horror trappings in front of kids.

While there’s virtually no risk that Isn’t It Romantic will make you love your favorite rom-coms any less, Strauss-Schulson hasn’t figured out how to have his cake and eat it, too – to look down on the very confection he’s so busy peddling.

It’s an inventive, exciting, and very funny homage to “Mister Rogers Neighborhood,” “The Electric Company,” and more live-action kids’ shows of yesteryear.

In the early going, though, Waititi manages to keep the tone light and the humor surreal enough to avoid too much association with the real world. But as his story devolves into melodrama, the comedy curdles.

It was like her birthday every day, if not several times a day. She treated every animal or tree as if it were the most amazing gift. Wonderful! Ravishing!

It’s genuinely passionate about telling the tale of a man who sought the truth and applied it to attain true equality under the law. Perfectly executed or not, we need these kinds of stories these days.
