Washington Black

Washington Black

Adapted from Esi Edugyan’s bestselling 2018 novel, the story follows “Wash” Black in two timelines: as an 11-year-old born into slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation who flees in an experimental flying machine, and years later, as he builds a new life in Nova Scotia under the guardianship of a Black refugee leader. Blending Victorian-era science and history with speculative inventions, it’s a timely tale of Black resilience and ambition that weaves in themes of freedom, identity, and belonging.  Sterling K. Brown (Paradise) and Tom Ellis (Lucifer) star.

A groundbreaking take on the British detective series, Code of Silence pivots around a deaf canteen worker whose lip reading skills become critical to an investigation into a violent criminal gang, as its members only meet in “unbuggable” locations.  From The Times‘ Carol Midgely:  “The result is a fresh, original drama that has done the near impossible and given us a cop drama with something new to say.”  (Read the review)

The Sandman S2

%%tb-image-alt-text%%
The Sandman S2

The adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s dark fantasy novels returns for its second and final season, culminating in a dramatic conclusion that explores forgiveness, legacy, and the cost of immortality. For those who need a quick refresh on this one: The Sandman fuses ancient mythology, folklore, and literary references as it reimagines gods, archetypes, and historical figures like Orpheus, Lucifer, and Shakespeare. The story is told through a character known as “Dream” – a cosmic being who governs imagination and memory. In Season 2, we meet Destiny, Delirium, and Destruction, completing “the pantheon of cosmic siblings.” You don’t need to read the graphic novels before watching the Netflix series, but you will want to start from the beginning. EW created a guide to prep viewers for Season 1.

Eddington

Eddington

Set at the height of COVID panic in a fictional New Mexico town, a showdown between a conservative sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and a progressive mayor (Pedro Pascal) quickly sweeps the town into “a boiling mix of paranoia, racial strife, political resentment, and displaced rage,” as the Watercooler’s Felipe Patterson describes. Adding another layer to the timeliness of the plot, the mayor tries to modernize the town by introducing an AI system that monitors everyone’s behavior. “Ari Aster’s most politically provocative film to date, Eddington pulls off something rare,” adds Patterson. “It makes our recent past worth revisiting. Not to rehash the trauma, but to remind us just how close we came to losing it, and how some towns still haven’t found their way back.”

Superstar

Set in the early 2000s, Spanish dramedy Superstar takes a bold, satirical look at the country’s celebrity culture by reimagining the life of pop icon Tamara—tracing her rise from tabloid curiosity to disco cult figure to her metamorphosis into “Yurena.”  Blending biography and fantasy, it’s a mind-bending take on fame and identity. Cineuropa describes the Netflix series as a modern farce filled with “glitter, unbridled imagination and baroque flair.”  (Read the review)

Low Life

Loosely based on the 1975 discovery of a 14th-century shipwreck, Hulu’s new Korean crime thriller has a few key ingredients that will make this one a summer binge watch: a high-stakes treasure hunt, a gritty 70s noir with moral ambiguities, and the actual true story of a sunken Chinese ship off the coast of Shinan.  The ensemble also includes some K-drama heavy hitters:  Ryu Seung-ryong (Moving), Yang Se-jong (Doona!), and Im Soo-jung (Melancholia).  The first three episodes stream today on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.
