Gentrification is a serious matter, especially in swiftly changing neighborhoods like North Oakland. Executive produced by Rosario Dawson, the web series North Pole helps illuminate the real costs through comedy, following three North Oakland natives as they struggle to stay in the city that they love in the face of rising costs and rapid deterioration of the culture at its core.
In addition to being a reference to the old school nickname for the area of North Oakland where the series is filmed, North Pole serves as a metaphor for the effects of gentrification, complete with endangered native “species” – the human population.
Anyone interested in the real affects of gentrification, not just from a numbers perspective, but also from the perspective of someone who knows what it feels like to watch your neighborhood change around you.
While the series is a great watch for anyone, the target audience is definitely people of color.
