HBO’s steamy and lavish new Brazilian period drama (dubbed in English) is based on the real-life 19th‑century figure known as Dona Beija, a woman who defied the rigid patriarchal norms of her era to become a powerful figure. The 40-episode melodrama, airing and streaming across 100 countries, weaves together the political tensions, class inequalities, sexuality and shame that defined an era as it follows the improbable arc of a legend. A darker, sexier drama than Bridgerton for historical fiction fans. Five episodes will be released each Monday.
