Twin gangster brothers (both played by Michael B. Jordan) try and escape their troubles by returning to their hometown in Mississippi to open a nightclub, only to face something more terrifying than the racism of the deep south: a vampire invasion. With a nod to Southern folklore and a blend of humor and horror, Ryan Coogler’s big swing is a wildly original take that the New York Times has called “a Southern Horror Fantasia.”  “Ryan Coogler’s Sinners’ is a big-screen exultation — a passionate, effusive praise song about life and love, including the love of movies. ” – Manohla Darghis  (Read the review)

A rare blend of comedy and mystery set against the gorgeous Welsh countryside, Death Valley follows a reclusive former TV actor (he played a detective) who reluctantly teams up with an ambitious female detective (the real thing and a fan of his) in a PG-rated, binge-worthy new BritBox show that’s ideal for a family TV night.  The six episode BBC show is less about complicated clues and crime-solving and more about the entertaining pairing of its two leads.

The Prosecutor

One of Hong Kong’s top-grossing films is this slick action thriller combined with a legal drama that’s inspired by an actual 2016 drug trafficking case. The story follows a man who falsely pleads guilty after being framed, and the cop-turned-prosecutor who’s convinced of his innocence, risking his career — and his life — to bring the real perpetrator to justice.  Watch the trailer.  The legendary Donnie Yen both directs and stars.

FX comedy 20-something life in New York

Adults

%%tb-image-alt-text%%
Adults

An FX take on the Gen-Z sitcom that’s been compared to Friends and Girls, Adults follows five 20-somethings in New York trying to grow up and make big life decisions as they stare down job insecurity, crazy high rents and student debt.  From The New York Times’ Esther Zuckerman: “‘Adults’ is frank about sex and drugs, but it is best when it is just straight-up zany. While it seems unlikely to become a generation-defining sensation, once ‘Adults’ finds its groove, it is perfectly diverting TV.”  (Read the review)  Two episodes air tonight on FX, with two more arriving each of the next three Wednesdays. The entire season will be available to binge tomorrow on Hulu.

Rick & Morty S8

Rick & Morty S8

The edgy, cult hit sci-fi satire follows mad scientist Rick and his grandson Morty as they embark on various alternate reality simulations. They’re back with a new one that sees Morty going to war while his sister Summer becomes a tech CEO, and fans of the show say “it’s back” after a bumpy 7th season. Showrunner Scott Marder describes his latest as “high-concept weirdness and character-driven chaos,” and you can jump in without playing catch-up. The episodes are often standalone stories, albeit with larger (and somewhat deeper) character arcs. Sundays at 11pm on Adult Swim. Streaming on HBO Max starting September 2025.
