One Hundred Years of Solitude

Gabriel García Márquez’s Nobel prize-winning novel gets a stunning series adaptation on Netflix, unspooling the sweeping saga of four generations of the Buendía family across 18 episodes while capturing the book’s magical realism and timeless tale of love and longing, power and corruption, destiny and legacy.

The Story:  Married against their parents’ wishes, cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán leave their village in search of a new home, and are accompanied by friends and adventurers. Together they found a utopian town on the banks of a river, which they baptize Macondo. Across several generations, they face madness, war, love and loss, and the fear of a terrible curse that could condemn them to one hundred years of solitude.   Watch the trailer.

Dream Productions

A spinoff from the Inside Out films that is set in between the events of the original and its sequel, Pixar’s first-ever TV series is a mockumentary set in the “studio of Riley’s mind,” where a director (voiced by Paula Pell) is trying to come up with her next hit dream with the help of a daydream director (Richard Ayoade) who is trying to move into “nighttime productions.” It’s all very meta. Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Phyllis Smith, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, and Ally Maki also provide voices for the series. All four episodes stream today – but save them for school break (you’ll need them!).

Good One

An emotionally resonant indie about a 17-year-old who heads out a weekend camping trip to the Catskill Mountains with her father and her oldest friend and is forced to quietly come to terms with her own simmering conflicts.  One of those movies that the less said, the better, but critics and Sundance audiences love this one. “Good One is, among its infinite attributes, an ode to a style of filmmaking that appears to be humble, yet still manages to be devastating and humanistic to its very core. Mostly, it’s just a great f*cking movie, full stop.” — Rolling Stone‘s David Fear (Read the review).
