My Oxford Year

An American woman with literary ambitions lands at Oxford University, the place of her childhood fantasies, but ends up in a steamy romance with a man who isn’t part of the dream. Part romcom, part melodrama, the adaptation of the novel of the same name by Julia Whelan has earned decidedly mixed reviews for its lack of literary heft, but the setting, the set-up, and the leads Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest are the draws here.

Eyes of Wakanda

Part of the new phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which just kicked off with the Fantastic Four reboot in theaters), Disney’s four-part animated anthology is also a Black Panther prequel. It follows Wakandan warriors who travel the world recover artifacts from four pivotal eras—1260 BC Crete, the Trojan War, 1400 AD China, and 1896 AD Ethiopia. Each 30 minute episode stands alone, but also falls within the MCU’s Sacred Timeline. But you don’t need any prior Marvel knowledge to get into the action, intrigue, and cultural history lessons.

King of the Hill reboot Hulu

King of the Hill

%%tb-image-alt-text%%
King of the Hill

Could this be the show where political opponents find common comedy ground?  Sixteen years after it ended its reign on FOX, Hulu is bringing back the animated TV-14 sitcom from legends Mike Judge (Silicon Valley, Beavis and Butt-Head) and Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation).  After a decade in Saudi Arabia Hank and Peggy Hill are back in Arlen, Texas and retired, and trying to come to terms with all of the Ubers and Whole Foods.  Their son Bobby now owns a Japanese-German fusion restaurant in Dallas, and they’re up against “manosphere influencers, soccer haters, and conspiracy theorists — but the hot button topics are handled with nuance and lighthearted comedy.  Several of the original cast return, including Judge, Pamela Adlon, Kathy Najimy, Lauren Tom, Stephen Root, Toby Huss, and the late Johnny Hardwick (who passed away after recording a few episodes). Ronny Chieng joins as neighbor Kahn.  Ten new episodes drop today.

The Life of Chuck

%%tb-image-alt-text%%
The Life of Chuck

Beginning with a man’s death at age 39 — which coincides with the end of the universe — this adaptation of a Stephen King novella starring Tom Hiddleston is a profound and funny tribute to the beauty of small moments and quiet impacts. Co-starring Mark Hamill and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the film will appeal to fans of Eternal Sunshine, The Tree of Life, and horror impresario Mike Flanagan’s movies (he co-wrote and directed). From Brian Truitt of USA Today: “If you want to go for the really scary stuff, there are plenty of other King movies for that. “Chuck” instead is something truly special, a moving fantasy of a life well lived and no dance step left untaken.” (Read the review)   Streaming for $9.99 across PVODs like Apple TV.

Dope Girls

Set in 1918 London and based on historical figures from post WWI England, Dope Girls follows a single mom and a dancer who open an underground nightclub and drug den in Soho, where they clash with a newly hired female detective. The BBC production is a fresh take on an era whose stories usually feature soldiers and battlefields, the six-episode historical drama is imaginative and dreamlike as it captures a world we haven’t seen before. Adapted from Marek Kohn’s book Dope Girls: The Birth of the British Drug Underground. Julianne Nicholson and Eliza Scanlen star.
